“Coming Soon” from New York artist Kim Gordon (perhaps best known for her work as a musician in such seminal projects as: Sonic Youth, Body/Head, Free Kitten, Mirror/Dash, Harry Crews & more) was a site-specific installation recently featured by the Gagosian Gallery at the famed Fitzpatrick-Leland House in Los Angeles.
“Design Office began in 1980 as a way to practice art outside of the gallery system.”
Under the Corporate-like moniker of “Design Office,” Gordon’s “Mulholland Series” of Wreath Paintings (ranging in size from 24×24 to 96×72) provided bold punctuations throughout the 1936 Modernist Rudolph Schindler-designed home. This work juxtaposed against the stark stillness of the interior and it’s wooded surroundings at times also elicited an almost voyeuristic sensibility.
“The exhibition presents an evolving situation–an artist’s active workspace, or a home in the process of being redecorated–that suggests eventual completion.”
