Michael C. Hsiung

The work of Los Angeles-based artist Michael C. Hsiung is currently celebrating its first major exhibition at The Vincent Price Art Museum’s Hoy Space in East L.A. (June 7 – July 24, 2004). Titled “Who Cares Wins!”, the show features over 100 pieces created by Hsiung over the past six years. It’s a comprehensive and beautifully irreverent showcase of an artist whose work quite often graces tee shirts, zines, tattoos, adverts & skate decks. As the museum’s overview so aptly sums up: “The artist’s cast of characters includes Vikings, surfer dudes, and psychedelic animals, as well as a fresh spin on the aquatic legend of the half human, half fish —a merman.”

Humor, wit and winking nods to folklore aside, to witness the level of exacting detail that goes into each piece is beyond impressive. As the show also proves, Hsiung’s work is equally as engaging whether ripped from his sketchbooks & informally tacked to the gallery wall or presented in close-to-human-scale cut out form. Equal parts charming & disarming, walking into Hoy Space you can’t help but feel as if you’re instantly surrounded by room full of spirited characters assembled together by one cunning (& boldly mustachioed) madman.
